Greg Barns’ assertions that police officers often have themselves to blame when they are assaulted must be condemned.
It is concerning that someone who is known as a justice advocate would say this, if for no other reason than his comments may be interpreted as justifying violence against police officers.
Tasmanians are telling us that they want their police officers offered greater protection and Mr Barns’ input has certainly not added to their safety.
The principle that Mr Barns should sign up to here is that it is never right, ever, to assault a police officer, an emergency worker or a health worker in the conduct of their duty.
If, as Mr Barns asserts, a police officer has acted inappropriately, then that should be dealt with.
However, there can be only one appropriate message for all Tasmanians: never, ever, ever assault a police officer.
