Libs boost for motor sport

2010

A Hodgman Liberal Government will support motor racing in Tasmania. We will provide the support the Tasmanian Drag Racing Association needs to purchase the Powranna Dragway and turn it into a world-class facility.

A Hodgman Liberal Government will provide a package of $521,000 to purchase the Powranna Dragway.

A $260,500 grant as well as an interest free loan of $260,500 will be made available subject to the completion of a feasibility study by the government.

This support will mean that top-tier races could be hosted in Tasmania, attracting up to 250 competitors per meet. With each competitor bringing about 6 crew members, this represents the potential for a massive boost to the Tasmanian economy.

Rene Hidding said:
As a result of the TDRA owning the Dragway, it will enable them to invest and upgrade facilities, including building concrete barriers, upgrading lighting, resurfacing the track and upgrading patron facilities such as toilets.

Motor sport is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia and this commitment today demonstrates the Tasmanian Liberals’ regard for all forms of competitive motorsport.

Tapping into this market by upgrading the Powranna track would have flow on effects for the local economy through tourism and exposure. Upgrading the track would also create a number of new, local jobs during the construction phase and also to cater for the much bigger race meets that would be possible.
