Minister Llewellyn to explain Garrett’s action on mako shark

2009

I am calling on the Minister for Fisheries, David Llewellyn, to explain whether Federal Minister Peter Garrett’s ban on catching mako sharks, as well as the porbeagle shark, will effect Tasmanian game fishers within state waters.

Mr Garrett’s actions to deliberately ignore the game fishing and sport fishing communities in banning the catching of mako shark, which is generally in abundance in Tasmanian waters, needs explanation by Minister Llewellyn, particularly on the question of whether he himself was consulted by Minister Garrett.

Minister Llewellyn needs to explain how this new regulatory environment will work if a game fisherman catches a mako within Tasmanian waters then proceeds out into Commonwealth waters with that fish on board.

It appears likely that Minister Garrett is simply not going to give a rational explanation of his actions on this matter. It is now down to Minister Llewellyn to provide a full explanation of the ramifications of this announcement.
