The RSPCA carries out certain administrative responsibilities under the Animal Welfare Act 1993 for which the State Government provides it an annual grant.

The Society is mentioned in the Act, but the Act also provides that the Governor may declare any society that has aims and objectives similar to those of the RSPCA under the Act.

In other respects it is a private organisation.

Provided that the functions for which it is funded by the Government are properly carried out, its other operations are properly a matter for its members, directors and management.

We are obviously concerned at the upheaval at the RSPCA which has been in the media, and we would be concerned if the functions for which it receives public funds are compromised, but we would need to have evidence that that is the case.
