Liberal Team in South East Lyons

2009

This week the State Liberals, joined by Tasmania’s Liberal Senators, spent two days in South East Lyons visiting local businesses, communities and community groups.

Community forums held over the two days gave us the opportunity to meet with members of the community and representatives of local organisations.

Issues consistently raised in our discussions with locals included poor public transport, neglected road infrastructure, traffic congestion and post-primary school education.

With an ageing population, health care and services are under increasing demand in the region, and we also discussed the capacity of care facilities in the area.

Sorell is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Tasmania and the challenges this inevitably poses have typically been put in the too hard basket by an out of touch, 11 year old Labor Government.

Businesses across the region are also conscious of the rising costs of doing business. Payroll tax, rising electricity costs and a lack of skilled workers are all barriers to greater prosperity for this part of Tasmania with great natural assets and productive capacity.

While there are a fantastic number of proactive community organisations contributing to the region, there is much more that should be done by the State Government to help the area to achieve its potential.

South Eastern Tasmania needs vision and leadership for the future.

The Liberal vision for South East Tasmania is a place where local business is backed to create local jobs and where the community is strong, united and the envy of Australia.

This region is so rich in promise and there are some highly motivated and dedicated people living in the community who share the Liberals’ drive to achieve more. But to help this region to achieve more, Tasmania needs to have an engaged State Government with dynamism and new ideas, not one that is 11 years old, stale and increasingly out of touch.
