Statement on Jack Johnston

2009

Today’s decision by the Supreme Court puts the ball back in the court of the Premier and the Minister for Police. They must act decisively and with regard to due process to ensure the leadership of Tasmania Police is not left in limbo.

Commissioner Jack Johnston may wish to return to duty, and the Government should indicate whether it believes today’s Supreme Court decision is the end of the matter.

Any actions must be in the long-term interests of the Police Service and the administration of justice in Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Police Service appears to be focused and well managed under Acting Commissioner Darren Hine and his team and the Government must ensure that no further destabilisation occurs.

We call on Police Minister Jim Cox and Premier David Bartlett to resolve this issue carefully, unlike the shambles of the last attempt to bring back former Commissioner Richard McCreadie.
